"One pingy dingy, ....." spark knock
As I continue to re-prioritize my punch list on my '94 , I know I'd better get to this one first. I've put about 2500 miles on my rig since buying it a couple of months ago. As the temperature goes up, I'm getting more and more "pinging" under acceleration. Other than that, she runs like a champ!
Soon it will be in the 110's here in Az. So I'm going to start with the normal stuff. "fuel filter", "fuel system cleaner" etc.
I thought I'd reach out to everyone see how common this is and what some have done to "fix" the problem.
She's got the 460ci V8.
Thanks in advance, Rick

I would check the timing(or have it checked) and try some higher octane fuel if the timing is not the problem.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Regular unleaded, 87 octane. Do you normally run a higher grade?

I always ran 87 with mine. Might be time for a tuneup for yours.Tucsonan wrote:Regular unleaded, 87 octane. Do you normally run a higher grade?

Higher octane is helping, ....but there's still a slight knock when I feather the throttle. Push it down and it'll go away. Have a new fuel filter in hand, and I'll check the timing. Any believers in fuel system cleaners, ...Seafoam?, ...before I take it for a tune-up.

I have used Seafoam with favorable results. On the fuel injected engine, I let it warm up and then removed the vacuum line to the brake booster and poured it in while idling. It produced a lot of ugly smoke but, the engine ran a little better and quieter.
As been mentioned, verify the timing is correct and there are no vacuum leaks. If everything checks out it may be related to carbon buildup on the pistons. Seafoam may be able to clear this. On the other hand, you may want to check some of the Ford truck forums to find out how others addressed this issue.
Good luck,
Gary

Re: "One pingy dingy, ....." spark knock
Thanks Gary,
I just ordered a new timing light after finding that mine wasn't working anymore. It should be in by this weekend so I will check it first before I go forward with any additives. Interesting that my Haynes manual specifies 5 degrees BTDC while the ford decal under the hood specifies 10 BTDC ?? This is for the '94 460ci. Thanks again, I'll post again after this weekend. Rick
