Water Heater Door Replacement

Post by usachris »

I didn’t like the worn looking water heater door on my ‘99 so I did a quick upgrade to a new door. It looks great and was so easy to swap out. And it is all aluminum. Not painted plastic.

I got mine off eBay. The cheaper ones are painted plastic so I avoided those.

This was the one I bought:

I bought this parts kit to go with the door but only used the latch, spring, and hinges. Totally worth it.

our door to the water heater was looking so very sad that I took a soap, water and a wire brush to the peeling surface and then painted it with aluminum colored paint. It is happier looking now and just passable for its age.

I should have used sand paper to prepare the surface. Too late now, the okanagan found a new owner.

I ordered a replacement aluminum door but it came in as gloss white. Trying to match the paint for a 94 model. Does anyone know the correct paint code?.....or where i can get a color match? The color code on the door for exterior color is very confusing. There is a group of letters and numbers that don't seem related.

The color code on our 95 B190 is YN. The color name is silver metalic.

I looked up the color for the 1994 B190 and the color name and code appear to be the same. Here is a link if you want to look up the color code and name for your airstream.

I went to a local auto paint store with the color code from the door sticker and they mixed the paint and loaded it into a spray can. I opted to use the base coat paint with a can of the acrylic clear coat to for the second coat giving it a nice glossy finish.

See if you can get it in a high heat formulation. That would keep that door looking good for a longer time.

Found a good, inexpensive spray paint match for our campers. If your paint code is YN, Dupli-color makes the paint in an 8oz spray can. The Dupli-color # is BFM0236 Silver Charcoal Metalic. (1Q, 14, D1,9Z, YN )

The can says it's a Ford color. I bought it off the shelf at Autozone for $8 and change. Refinished my heater access door and put on several layers of clearcoat. Great match!
