As I was driving, I heard a loud pop and then a hissing noise which seem to be coming from the counter area. Any ideas of cause? Thanks.

If you smell propane, turn it off at the tank.

About the only other things I can think of near the counter are the refrigerator (is it working?) ...or if there was a rupture in your water heater. Check under the cabinets for leaks.

Are you storing any carbonated beverages? Check the champagne cupboard. Seriously though, our water heater does make a popping sound when it comes on and the hissing could be a hole in the tank. I don't think the regular water system is under any pressure and, if you don't smell propane you can eliminate that as a source. Let us know what the mysterious source is.

Moved to basic questions...this definitely isn't a for-sale ad.

I'm really struggling to think of what would be hissing in the cabinet for more than a few moments. Unless the pump was on and it was pushing air out through a faucet (or leak in the line).

Along the lines of what Skater said - had you been running the hot water heater before this? Thinking that could cause some pressure buildup...
