Also check the filler tube and vent lines. I have a 1995 and had a bad gas smell. Ford dealer said it was the gas cap. Wrong!
Finally got a dealer in Florida to drop the tank. As the gas drops in volume, it sloshes back an forth more causing the air to
be forced out of the tank. The vent rubber line was dry rotted. New line, no smell.
