Horn and cruise control

Electrical issues, both 12 volt and 120 volt

Horn and cruise control

Both the horn and cruise control stopped working. I can get the horn to blow if i pull the steering wheel center pad off and ground the horn pad. The horn will then work when pressing the front of the pad.
Sounds like I have a bad ground that effects both the cc and horn. Anyone know where I can start looking for that ground?

What year is your van? I have a set of shop manuals for 1991 (which should cover that year and likely prior B190s, too). I'm going to be traveling this week (alas, not in the camper :( ), but when I get home next weekend I can look in there to see if there's anything helpful, if you have a 1991 or older model.

Probably not - they redesigned the van for '92 or '93, so my manuals might not be any help at all.

turns out the connector to the computer that is located under the brake booster was not connected all the way.

I have the same problem on a 1998 B190. I'll certainly look for that connector although my layout may be different since the year model is not the same as the OP. I'll take a look and post the results.

I checked under the hood and under the dash and did not find any loose connectors. Searching the internet for similar problems I see several people on various Ford forums describing a bad clock spring (clockspring?). Many of them have the same problem - no cruise, no horn, and no known problem with the air bag. On the other hand, some have no cruise, no horn and they have an air bag light that comes on. I can't quite tell yet if there is a different problem when the air bag doesn't send a fault versus when the air bag has a fault.

Regardless, has anyone replaced the clock spring? I'd like to do some troubleshooting before I spend the money on this part and the time to replace it. Any ideas? Anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1998 E150? Shop manuals?

Econoline 150... Normally these are built on an Econoline 350 chassis though.

nvestysly: The clock spring diagnosis makes sense to me - it's probably the only part the horn and cruise would have in common. I've never done it, so I don't have an idea of how difficult it is. I know you need a steering wheel puller, which I think you can rent from the auto parts store.

OOPS! I meant E350

I see an online price for the clockspring - it's about $70 if I can believe the web site I found. I watched some videos about disconnecting the battery, removing the air bag module from the center of the steering wheel, and removing the steering wheel (I do have a puller). I've found references to doing these things on F series trucks and I presume it would be very similar (maybe the same) for E series vans.

I haven't taken time to do diagnostic tests yet - I plan to check the horn by itself and some other preliminary work before I make the decision to remove the wheel.

If anyone has wiring diagrams that would be helpful. I hesitate to buy shop manuals since this vehicle will be turned over to my sister-in-law in a few months. If I was keeping the van I would buy the shop manuals.

The cruise control and horn don't work on our 1998 B190. I don't have idiot lights indicating a problem with the airbag. So two of three things running through the clockspring are not working.

I decided to remove the air bag (disconnected battery first), remove the steering wheel and remove the clockspring. After checking continuity through the clockspring it seems everything is good - for each pin on one end of the connector I can find a corresponding pin on the other end and there is continuity.

So I guess I have another problem. Any ideas? I have not found an loose connectors.

Since the clockspring seems to be working and I ran out of troubleshooting ideas I decided to visit a local Ford dealer to see what they could find. I'm sitting in the waiting room and just received word from the service advisor. The diagnostics they've performed indicate there is a problem with the engine wire harness. A replacement harness is not available from Ford so they're looking for an aftermarket or used harness.

At this point I suspect I will not have any work done on the van today. I'll try to get as much information from the dealer as possible regarding the part number for the harness, etc. before I leave here today. Maybe I can track this down to a broken wire or two and the harness can be repaired. Don't know at this point.

I'll post here again when I receive more information.
