If you smell propane, turn it off at the tank.
About the only other things I can think of near the counter are the refrigerator (is it working?) ...or if there was a rupture in your water heater. Check under the cabinets for leaks.

Are you storing any carbonated beverages? Check the champagne cupboard. Seriously though, our water heater does make a popping sound when it comes on and the hissing could be a hole in the tank. I don't think the regular water system is under any pressure and, if you don't smell propane you can eliminate that as a source. Let us know what the mysterious source is.

Moved to basic questions...this definitely isn't a for-sale ad.
I'm really struggling to think of what would be hissing in the cabinet for more than a few moments. Unless the pump was on and it was pushing air out through a faucet (or leak in the line).

Along the lines of what Skater said - had you been running the hot water heater before this? Thinking that could cause some pressure buildup...
