Re: Remodel of my 1996
So this weekend I was going to do my mockup of the way the storage in the back end would look, including a way to make my vertical panels to cover the inside of the fiberglass cap. Turns out, Airstream chose some odd ways to wire this van, so I spent most of my time pulling out the wiring so that ...

Re: Remodel of my 1996
From the way the window looks on the outside, I'm guessing they had some leaks that got back behind the luan. The top of the window looks like they used an entire tube of caulking on it, not sure they bothered to pull the window in order to fix the seals. Might be a good idea for me to do so now ...

Re: Atwood Water Heater Switch
Also, I discovered that if you have a dead or very low house battery the furnace and water heater will not ignite. Clicking, fan (in the case of the furnace), but no ignition. New battery, and voila. BTW, I found a nice AGM that allows for a full draw down and has 100 AH that fits in the battery bay ...

Re: Cheap Captain Seat Covers - Where to Buy?
It's an evergreen post, coming back a decade after the last reply.
I've been watching my seats deteriorate and wondering if I'd try sewing covers from the idea on this board (the template is, um, difficult for me to interpret, though apparently not that complicated). I contacted an upholstery shop ...

coaxial cable roof penetration: no cable entry plate beware leaks
Friends and countrypeeps,
For the five years I've owned the Turtle, I've noticed a musty smell in the closet. It's a 1996, so no wet bath but it has the black tank vent stack running through the closet. I've always thought that maybe there's a little leak in that. But then I realized that the smell ...

Re: New speakers, radio and back up camera...
Nice work! I am especially jealous of your back up camera!
follow-up to an old thread... we had the stereo shop put in a new stereo, front speakers, a viper alarm with remote locking, and a backup camera, the display for which is a rear-view mirror that fits over our OEM rear-view mirror. The ...

Re: Propane tank removal
OK, I hope to close the loop here.
I was taking the van into the shop to have a noise addressed (rear wheel bearings? differential? Survey says: differential!) and asked them to get the tank off since I was unable to free the nuts. They ended up taking off the entire bracket that had the rotating ...

Re: Propane tank removal
Next up, I noticed that the brackets are loose, somehow. My next step is to replace the bolts for those. I plan to do those one at a time, so that I don't have to lower the tank again.
Do you mean that single bolts that attach the brackets to the van chassis? Do you have access to the back ...

Re: Propane tank removal
Well, of course nothing is easy. I was able to break 27 years of rust and remove one of the nuts on the three bolts holding the tank to brackets. One of them, however, just started spinning in the slotted bracket on the tank itself. I don't know how to get it off except to cut it at this point ...

Re: Towing a Trailer
We've towed a small uhaul trailer (4x6) and now sometimes pull an old Bantam m-100 trailer; in either we're topping out at 1,000 pounds on the trailer and the van doesn't seem to know it exists. We heat up a bit more than normal over long passes in WA/OR/CA but that's about it for effects. Mileage ...

Re: Propane tank removal
Just posting to keep the details in the thread. I cut a notch in the screw, then broke the head in half with an impact driver. I also, per Skater's idea, tried removing the nut behind the handle, but that guy was stuck tight. So I've found a local propane tank shop that will replace the whole valve ...

Re: Camping...just beyond the campground, and how to navigate washboard roads comfortably in the B
Rugster, the clearance was one of the reasons I got the B-190, limited as it may be. My dad has a Winnebago Rialta on a VW van platform. While it drives great and gets double the mileage I do, it's only got about 4" of clearance. Driving gravel roads, he's knocked the waste tank valves clean off ...

Re: wind noise
The only time the wind noise is really an issue is when I've left a vent or side window slightly open. Those sliding windows seem to like to hiss and howl when you hit highway speeds. I pretty much leave the bathroom vent open all the time, though, and that one isn't noticeable. I'm coming from ...
