Hi,

Reading all the fuel pump posts, I was still not able to gauge the average life of the fuel pump. I have a 1993 460 with 90k on it. As these pumps are pricey, I'm trying to hold off until 100k before replacing. I have had no problems to date. Any advice?

The original fuel pump on my '94 didn't make it to 50K miles. If you have no problems, consider yourself lucky and wait until it becomes bothersome. it. You probably already know this if you read all the posts, but the replacement fuel pump is a different, improved design compared with the original.

The fuel pump on my 190 was failing when I bought it at 47,000 miles a fact the seller neglected to mention which could have gotten me killed. After a number of breakdowns a Ford dealer in Florida diagnosed it properly and I replaced the pump at about 54,000 miles at a cost of $700 back in 2007. That pump lasted to about 150,000 miles but I changed fuel filters every 9,000 miles which is much sooner than the Ford service guideline. The pump replacement was $1000 this time.

dang....just bought mine and they replaced the fuel filter in hopes to get more life out of the pump. Running pretty well right now(knock on wood) and do not look forward to that expense. 1992 with 50,000 miles

Don't have any history on any work done before the gentleman I bought it from, will probably do mine, myself, next spring, just to be safe. Do the back tank and then sometime over the summer, the front.

I just had the misfortune of dealing with this dreaded issue this past week.

Background:

1993
57K miles
Drove about 500 miles over the previous few days from San Diego to Sacramento

The fuel tank was at about 1/4 tank I filled it at a local gas station.

Jumped on the freeway and about 10 miles down the freeway I suddenly lost power. Thankfully I was able to coast to the median.

Got towed to a service station where they diagnosed the issue as a fuel pump. They noted that there was an issue electrical issue with the fuel pump and that it had blown its 50 amp fuse.

2 days and $850 later I received my rig back and within the first 10 miles it did the same thing.

Any thoughts?

Update -

It turned out that the issue was a short in a wire that powered the fuel pump. Thankfully the 2nd time it shorted the fuse blew and no damage was incurred by the new fuel pump. The service station that replaced the fuel pump was quickly able to troubleshoot the issue and made the repair to the wire that was shorting. Best part was that I was back on the road the next day. No issues since then.
