Gas gauge not working?

Check out this thread. Post #9 describes how to remove the tank and replace the float. However the pump, float, and sender are all one unit - so the part is expensive. 
Otherwise it's actually a fairly straightforward job, though you do have to drop the fuel tank to do it.
