Starter Issues

Post by Abie Sea »

I am looking for information on whether anyone else has solved a problem similar to one I am currently experiencing, before I try to resolve it myself. The vehicle is at home and would need a mobile mechanic if professional help was required.

At the end of the last season I filled the gas tanks and was parking the winterized vehicle 89 B190. When I wanted to restart the vehicle to change positioning, all I got was a single sound, then nothing. Not a hard clunk, but something that stopped and shutdown the system. I considered a bad battery, but that did not seem right. I had gone to the gas station, and there were several occasions to restart the vehicle.

Fast forward 6 months or so. The system acted the same way. The battery tests well, when the key is switched on, the fan, radio and all power seem to be functioning normally, but when I turn to start, the battery warning light lights up, and the system shuts down. It does the same when the battery is jumped by another vehicle, suggesting that the battery strength is not the issue. There is not a lot of information on the this site on a problem like this, but there is discussion about a solenoid problem in the drive train section about a wiring short, a starter problem or a blown fuse. I am not well versed in doing things inside of the cramped engine space. It seems like after the system shuts down there is no reaction to turning the key either to the power on or the starter condition, but in 5 to 10 minutes the power comes back of when the key is turned. This does not support a fuse issue, unless it is a self correcting circuit protector. Any suggestions would be appreciated

That kind of sounds like a bad battery - they'll tend to recover after a few minutes. Maybe a bad starter is drawing too much current.
