I haven't, but I'd expect about $2500-$3000, assuming you buy a rebuilt engine. If you just buy one from a lower-mileage vehicle from a junkyard, you may get away with less.

engine replacement

Post by craigmar »

Hi Brenda, I haven't replaced the 460 but did replace a 5.0 in my mustang and even though it was quoted at around $2500 the total was almost a $1000 more as it came out to $3400 and change. I went through American Engine Exchange and basically did the talking with a rep in Texas and after the initial talk was directed to a local shop that they had here in Utah. You have to watch out for all the incidentals that come up all of a sudden like new hoses, clamps, belts etc. Those items and issues don't usually come up until after they have the vehicle and the motor is out so then you are stuck with the particular shop unless you have a way to move the vehicle and parts and pieces. The excuse given is always wear and tear of old parts vs putting on new parts or rebuilt and in my case they wanted me to put on a new water pump which I had recently replaced. I opted out of that because I knew it was good but after getting my car home, it was leaking so they replaced the pump after all. ( I can't say something fishy happened but it sure smelled funny ). Anyway make sure you get a complete quote including all the nuts and bolts, hoses belts clamps ect. because they will hit you up and those might be unexpected costs adding $'s to the quote.
Craig

craigmar has an excellent point. When I had the transmission replaced, they pretty much told me up front what it would cost, but there were a couple extra incidentals (and it didn't help that the water pump failed while they were testing the new transmission - and, yes, he did show me the old one, it had more slop in the bearing than you would believe), such as new universal joints for the driveshaft and all. But, an engine would have a LOT more of that sort of thing than the transmission does.

That was about $3500 for me. That included a remanufactured Jasper transmission, with a 3 year/75,000 mile warranty. I also had them install a drain plug in the bottom of the pan to make fluid changes a bit easier (not really necessary), and a transmission temperature gauge (not strictly necessary but a good idea).

It has been worth every penny. Mine was leaking every now and then, dripping transmission fluid on my towed car, and acting strange from time to time. I didn't really want to spend the money, but now it's great not having to worry about it.
