To polish your headlights to remove haze and yellowing, use Brasso metal polish as directed. This substance is formulated for metals such as copper but works great to restore crystal clear appearance to plastic lenses including removing scratches from watch crystals.

Common problem with the Ford van headlight after 1991...
As the plastic begins to yellow your ability see see at night is great diminished.
In addition to your suggestion, there is a kit available for this also but requires that your have a small buffer or perhaps a cordless drill to use the supplied compound and pads.
