Towing Jeep Liberty

Post by hotone41 »

Hi Everyone, We just got our '93 B190. We previously had a 30 foot class C RV and towed our Jeep Liberty with a blue ox tow set up, 4 wheels down. Tried the same set up with the B190 today, towing the Jeep. Didn't work out well, tons of van swaying!! Ft really dangerous. Any thoughts or suggestions? Think this set up will work in any way for us. Engine strength was great, swaying was not.

How much does a Jeep Liberty weigh? You only have about 6,000 lbs available between people, stuff, and towed weight, to keep within the specs for the van. You can probably fudge that some, but if the Jeep is really heavy that may be part of the problem. (These numbers are based on the 15,000 max combined weight rating of my '91; I assume yours is similar but I don't know for certain. For reference, the van itself weighs about 9,000 lbs.)

Assuming the Jeep isn't putting the rig way over the limit, the other thing I'd check is the suspension of the van. Make sure the shocks, sway bar bushings, steering, etc., is all in good condition. Also, are the tires inflated correctly? In my '91, the rears had to be at 80 PSI to handle the weight; the fronts were something like 55 PSI. There should be a sticker inside the driver's door telling you what to use.

Something seems amiss... We tow a Geo Tracker four down behind our '93 B190 and I can't even tell its back there. Never once felt it tug on the B190.

I had already installed heavy duty shocks and antisway bars front and rear to tame the B190's swaying... big difference! I finished those upgrades before I started towing the Tracker. So I don't know what towing would have felt like without those modifications.

Just be shure when the transfer case is in neutral the rear bering is getting lubrication or it will damage it. call a jeep dealer or cretable four wheel drive shop just to be shure I've seen liberties being towed but not shure what options of transfer case's thay have. On the fords a manual case is fine a electric shift can not be towed.

Great answers. I think we are OK with weight of the jeep- is around 3500 pounds. Kentuckian, what brand of anti-sway bars did you buy? We used to tow this jeep four down with our other RV, so I think the jeep is OK, it is an issue with either shocks or suspension bar. We have new tires. I'll keep you updated. Anti sway bars will be what we start with I think.

Do you remember the brand name of the anti sway bars? Did you do the install yourself?

Hotone41-

Q) Brand of anti sway bars
A) Hellwig

Q)Did you install yourself?
A) Yep, if you are handy with tools, its not a difficult job.

Here is a link to the thread that I started that discusses my anti sway bar install. Let me know if you have additional questions.
