Replacing Gray Tank in 1990

Post by Sub2RainEN »

Hey all!

After over 3 years, my B is almost ready for its second major trip, and the first with the ability to cook and refrigerate.

I’m arranging to stay at an Airstream park this summer, but it requires a working gray tank, no gray water may be discharged. My tank was damaged after purchase, I suspect from the wrong type of tow truck almost always being sent.

Has anyone replaced theirs? What tank did you buy? I had an appointment at Camping World a month or so ago and they couldn’t figure out my electrical issues. For the gray tank, they wanted to keep it potentially for weeks to find and order the right one. Same with a local chain recommended by a neighbor. I’d rather go in with a tank and just get the job done.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm not sure about the availability of replacement tanks. I'd be tempted to investigate rerouting the gray plumbing to the black tank, though. But it wouldn't be able to hold much, so if you were planning to stay places that don't have a sewer hookup in the future, this would severely limit your time.

Thanks Skater.

For now, since funds are limited, I plan to catch the gray in 2 5-gallon containers and dump into the black tank or use to rinse it.

I’ll have a 2 point site (water, electric). There is a dump on site, as well as bathrooms. Between the two, I hope dumping once every week or two will work.

The black tank is now broken from a tow needed because Best Buy apparently broke the hood release wire while installing my stereo (which doesn’t even work). Due to the black water leak, my mechanic kept it longer to finish the repair in one day (he was just going to pry the hood open and charge battery), I missed my stereo reinstall again.

I’m really going through it with other people’s mistakes recently.

I assume they opened the hood to disconnect the battery while doing the install. Probably just a coincidence that it broke then, though - on vehicles as old as ours, weird things start to happen. Like my 1999 model year car - the throttle cable pulled through the gas pedal. Everything worked fine, but I couldn't drive the car!

It’s been one thing after another trying to prep for this trip. Maybe I should heed the signs, but I really need to get away.
