Did the car battery option work in the long run on a 93?

Post by Reddeer »

I have seen some old comments about using an Interstate car battery - C50-XHD - as the house battery in place of a deep cycle in a 1993. Did this solution work out longer term? What was the life of this battery versus a true deep cycle? Has anyone used a slim "electric wheelchair" deep cycle battery (usually on 55 amp hours capacity) as a "slim size" replacement?
Thanks!

As I went to determine which batteries i need to get for replacing my existing, I discovered that our house battery has been a car battery all along. It is a Motorcraft BXT-50. It has seemed to work satisfactorily until now. My vehicle battery is in far worse shape under a load test, but neither pass it. The starting battery is a group 65. I will report back which battery I re-install as a house battery later today. i cannot remember which they said it was based upon size.

It should work fine - the only caveat is that a deep cycle battery is better able to handle deep discharges, which will damage a conventional battery more quickly. So if you're careful not to let it get very discharged, I would think it'd last just as well.

Thanks, Skater. I am trying to keep the loads down on it - just LEDs and occasional furnace fan and monitor the voltage closely. So far so good.
