Tachometer Hook up help

Post by Denco »

Ok so i bought a VDO tach for the 1994 van. the van has coil with two leads, one wire is tan the other is red with a line filter. Pretty obvious the line filter should be the positive lead, the tan would then be the negative lead to the distributor.

Although when i google the coil color codes for the vans it says the negative is a Grey wire with an orange stripe and at the coil?

Well not true- I did find that color wire but not at the coil. It was leaving the dist then went to a plug-then poof it dissapeared.

I was not able to ohm out the tan wire at the coil to the grey with orange at the dist.

So the tach is reading 1500 rpm at idle, prolly double the true reading.

The dip swithces are correct for a v8 on the tach.

One would think there is a Tach signal under the dash or at the OBD port?

Any help is very appreciated!!

Well after lots of data torture the tach signal i got is correct. the VDO is POS and has been sent back and will be replaced with an Autometer...
VDO/Continental has a worthless tech support even tho they make gauges for many OEMs.
