I have 1999 and was planning on replacing the carpet with stick-on laminate flooring this weekend. I decided that instead of gutting the entire interior, I would just cut the carpet around the cabinets, bench, etc. and glue the new flooring on top of the subfloor. Easy enough right? I assumed that there was a plywood or OSB subfloor underneath the carpet but when I peeled back a section near the bathroom I found that its just really thick foam under the carpet with no subflooring at all. It's really thrown a wrench into my plans and I'm racking my brain trying to come up with a new solution. It's not a huge issue, it's just that this project is going to cost more than I was planning on spending. Is this typical for late model 190's? Has anyone else run into this problem and figured out a good solution? I searched the forums and from what I can tell, the early 190's had a plywood subfloor

Re: 1999 Flooring question
It seems like an option you already know would be to remove the carpet and Dynamat - that’s the layer of insulating/soundproofing - from the areas you want to add the new flooring. Then glue in a subfloor - the same thickness as the Dynamat - and install your new flooring on top. Take care with your measurements so the finished flooring is the same height of the existing carpet.
I know you dont want to gut the interior but hopefully these shots from my ‘99 renovation might be of interest.

Oh wow! Thanks Chris. You did a damn good job man! Those photos have definitely provided inspiration towards my project. Did you put any insulation down between the subfloor and the floor of the van? If not, have you noticed any difference in road noise or having any issues with heating or cooling? Also, where'd you score those window shades? Looks sharp!

Re: 1999 Flooring question
Thanks! The wife was really the one calling the shots on the interior. I got to handle the transmission cooler, expanded battery bank, new tire and suspension mods, and all other exterior and under the hood upgrades
After several trips with the new flooring, we think it’s quieter with the wood subfloor than with the Dynamat and carpet. We never used the heating and cooling much with the carpeting in it, but we’re really enjoying it now with the wood subfloor and rubber tile flooring. Heating is very nice, cooling is great, and cleanup is a breeze. No additional insulation was added to the wood subfloor. My wife picked out the material for the blinds, matched it with some wonderful blackout liner, and had them custom-made to fit all the windows in the van. Really a nice touch that I couldn’t have imagined.

Chris,
Impressive job. I can appreciate how much work went into that rebuild. The results are very nice. WTG!
