Possible downtime

Post by skater »

Hi, all. You may have noticed that the site was down for several hours yesterday. That was because the hosting provider upgraded the server, and the (old) software we run on the site wasn't compatible with the new software on the server. I found a workaround to get the site up and running, fortunately, but:

I gotta do an upgrade. What stopped me before was the plugins we use, like Gallery and the portal page. But, we have to do the upgrade, even if we lose the integration with the Gallery (not that it's highly integrated anyway) and the portal. This software is years out of date and unsupported, and sooner or later something will break that I can't fix.

I promise I will do my best to avoid losing anything, mostly by backing everything up and working only on the copy, then pointing the URL to the new installation. The Gallery may be offline immediately after the upgrade for a while, but I promise it won't be lost - it'll just be hiding. I figure, at worst, we can set up the Gallery as a separate site. (The Gallery software is also quite dated. In fact, I'm not sure it's actively developed any more.)

You may also notice the site being down now and then as I work on it. Please be patient!

Thanks!

Uh, actually, the upgrade has gone much more smoothly than expected, so we're now running on the new software!

I have tapatalk re-enabled already. Working on the portal now.

The Gallery software is a discontinued project. :( I'm not sure what to do about that at the moment.

((( TRIED a Private Message to ya but got a string of errors )))

Is there a photo host option you'd suggest...??

Did the jerks at photobucket ever become anything but money-grubbing pirates ...?

I have for years also had smugmug.com for our own photo albums, I guess I need to see if pictures hosted there
can be linked to in a forum setting like we have here.

Thanks for the neat upgrade.... !

Yeah, looks like PMs aren't working - I got notification about your messages, but I can't read them - I get a string of errors, too.

I don't have a photo hosting solution. I'm working on getting the old one working, stay tuned (but the PM issue is going to take precedence).

Okay... ... ... the problem was the Tapatalk plugin. I disabled it, the PMs worked, then I re-enabled it...and the PMs still worked. Everyone, keep me posted if you have a problem! (I did change one thing, the cookie name, so that may have been the issue.)

Skater..... I did a little research. The CEO that pulled the black mail / robbery attempt at Photobucket was fired immediately and they revaluated their attemp at holdimg us hostage to $400 per year,to remove pictures customers had there and their hosting service.... from $400 per years to $24.95 per year. It looks like ALL my pictures have been restored on b190.com.... and I havent paid them a dime.

Okay! I have some news on the photo gallery.

Basically, the old photo gallery software won't integrate with this forum software (it's just too old). However, the slightly newer version will, and it seems to work well, and is much more tightly integrated than before (I'm still hesitant, because that version hasn't been updated in ~4 years, too, so I'm sure someday it'll break - but there aren't really any other great options I've found).

To use the new gallery, click on your username in the upper right, and then on User Control Panel. Then click on the Gallery tab, and click on the button that says "Create Personal Album" (I may be paraphrasing here). After you do that, you can upload images using the Upload Image link, or create more sub-albums (like folders).

Click on Gallery in the top right to view the gallery. At the moment, only one picture I uploaded as a test is present.

I am working on making the old gallery accessible in read-only mode. I'm sort of hoping I can import those pictures into the new gallery yet, though. It might be a manual process.

Can you reset my PM count? It said I had 2 unread so I deleted all my messages and now it says -1. Thanks!

If anyone else has this problem, the solution is to receive a PM. Just let me know. You might even be able to send one to yourself to fix it.
