Move Spare Tire

Post by Sheila G »

Hi All,

I have a 2000 B190 with the spare tire mounted on the inside of my rig. I am planning to move the spare to the outside back door using a Surco TF200 tire carrier that I got from Amazon. I saw in a post from way back that someone was considering this but was concerned about too much weight on the door. I was wondering if this person or anyone else out there with later models moved their spare tire to the outside back door and if so how it worked out for them?

Many thanks.

This may have been mentioned in the other thread, but they hung off the door for years...it's hard to imagine the door on the 2000 would be that much weaker.

That said, it's not the way I'd go, if money weren't an object. The problem with it hanging on the door is that it is hard on the door, adding places where water can get in and putting more weight on the hinges.

To me, the ultimate solution if you want it outside would be one of those aftermarket bumpers that have a tire carrier on them. They're not cheap, I'm sure, but they also look like they're built to last forever. Colonial Patrick has one on his B190 (video here).

Thanks for your input Skater. Unfortunately money is a problem. :( I retired last year and I'm on a very fixed income. I checked out the link you sent and that mount was $850 ..... way too much for me. I saw on the post that I referenced, someone suggested adding a steel plate where I drill the holes in the door for extra support. I may try that although I didn't think about leaks. I already have a small leak coming through the back door but It only leaks when we get a torrential rain storm here in TX. I may have to rethink this whole thing. I was planning to get a solar suitcase for boondocking and hoped to store it where my spare tire currently is mounted. Not sure what to do now. :?

Cheers,

You could use a hitch mounted cargo rack and strap the spare down to that. Something like this maybe:

MaxxHaul Aluminum 49.5 Inch x 22.5 Inch 70422 48" x 21" Hitch Mount Compact Cargo Carrier-500-lb Load Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SL2STX4/re ... rEb5S0AWT8

Yes I thought about that Mike. I have a cargo carrier but the tire will block access to the back door.

There's always those overlander style flip out hitches for jeeps and stuff... kind of pricey, but will flip out of the way of your doors... something like: https://wilcooffroad.com/shop/hitchgate-solo/

Thanks for the info but way too pricey for me. I may have to keep the tire where it is and find somewhere else to store the solar suitcase. In the meantime I'm going to go buy lottery tickets.

I have a rack similar to that (I haven’t installed it yet) but I was worried about the solar suitcase bouncing around and being out in the elements. It does come with a case so it would be somewhat protected and I guess I could also put a tarp around it but I’m a bit worried about it bouncing around. And actually I could put the solar suitcase somewhere inside my rig. Up in my bunk maybe. I just thought it would be easier to keep it where the spare is and nice to have that extra storage. I’m going to be on the road for a long time (I hope). After rethinking this I think I’m going to return the tire rack. It just doesn’t seem worth it to take a chance of damaging my door. Here’s the solar suitcase that I’m planning to purchase.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

I'd also worry about it being stolen. Would it even fit where the spare tire is stored, though? (I didn't look closely at the dimensions.)

Yes I measured it and it would just fit. But I will find a place somewhere inside my living/sleeping area to store it. I have a really nice mountain bike that I take with me. My kids gave it to me for my birthday and I know it was quite expensive. I usually keep it inside the coach when traveling but I can move it to the outside carrier and cover it for protection. If I move my bike outside I'll definitely have room for the solar suitcase.
